Leuchtembergia principis – Characteristics
The Leuchtembergia principis is an endemic cactus plant native to Mexico that can be naturally found in the semi-desert areas of the states of Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas and grows at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,000 meters. It is often called “Agave cactus” due to its resemblance to this family. It is the only species of the genus Leuchtenbergia, characterized by slow growth that can reach 70 centimetres in height. It has large underground tuberous roots with long greyish-green tubercles with a triangular section, similar to Agave leaves. Its areolas are fluffy and the spines are flexible and even more than 20 centimetres long. The flowers bloom during the hot period are they are funnel-shaped.
